Bon Appetit

Beyond Christmas, it's been a busy month of conquering milestones for my baby girl. She now sits up and is enjoying solids and cereal. She's  officially a big girl! Well, somewhat.

It was a bit of a struggle getting her to accept the spoon and for her to get the hang of keeping the food in her mouth, but a talk with her pediatrician encouraged me to not force her into it but to always offer her some healthy veggies.

We have several new babies in the family and in our church family from a week to three months apart. Needless to say, it's been a challenge to not be pressured into meeting milestones. I really dislike being compared and so I do my best to not compare myself to anyone or, now, compare my baby to any other baby. I decided I needed to stop watching the calendar and instead keep an eye on her signals. This seemed to help her ease into solids instead of forcing them down her throat. So, I waited.

The signs became clear- she watched me while I ate, made chewing motions with her mouth and she was hungrier throughout the day even with more frequent feedings. Besides speaking with her doctor, I found this website useful in helping me fully understand and determine whether or not she was ready. It also has great recipes I can't wait to give a try. The website suggest giving your baby the same veggie or solid food for four days to determine any food allergies. I am really looking forward on getting some squash, green beans and avocado in the mix.

So far I've only been giving her infant cereal, mixed with a bit of sweet potatoes and some formula, once a day. I'm working on giving it to her twice a day, she still really enjoys her ba-ba's though. What I do is feed her cereal then a four ounce bottle shortly after.

I'm very excited for my sweet baby girl, but as a clingy, obsessive mother, I have to admit there is a little bit of sadness to this all. It's a bittersweet emotion that I guess only mommies understand. She's growing up and there is no stopping her.
